Pe Metawe [Come and Play]
Community members of all ages enjoy a wide variety of recreational activities in Fishing Lake Métis Settlement, with opportunities to participate in sports and social activities all year round. A number of facilities for organized activities are located in the settlement where the community hosts events and competitions. A spray park and skate park are the newest additions to the growing list of outdoor amenities in Fishing Lake.
Many members explore the surrounding lakes and hills, travelling an extensive network of trails on skis, snowmobiles, bicycles, dirt bikes and ATVs. Downhill skiing is gaining in popularity, with opportunities to learn at a ski hill in nearby Cold Lake.
A number of beaches are located nearby, notably along the shores of Frog Lake, where FLMS owns a campground at Riel Beach. It’s a popular destination for picnics, swimming, sunbathing, boating and camping.
Hunting and fishing–a part of our history–remain popular in the area, which features a variety of wildlife and some of the best fishing in Alberta. Horses are important to many members, who participate in annual rodeos that take place in surrounding farming communities and towns. Many members of the settlement have taken up golf, visiting golf courses throughout northern Alberta from here to Edmonton.
Residents also benefit from programs and events in surrounding communities a short drive from the settlement, where they can enjoy music, movies, dancing and a selection of eateries. Casino Dene, developed by Denesuline Tribe of Cold Lake First Nations and located just south of Cold Lake, often brings live entertainment to the area.
